March, 2009

Again this year we have been very busy with the work of Friends of Redtail Society. The After much difficulty the Society finally achieved a purchase and sale agreement with the land owner, Wagner Forest NS and it is now in full fundraising mode. The Society has until December of this year to raise the purchase price of 250,000, tax included. We need all the help we can get if we going to preserve the natural beauty and integrity of this area. For information on the Society and progress on the Sheltering Forests campaign, go to www.friendsofredtail.ca.

Billy spent three and a half months of last year in the remote northern community of Kugluktuk, Nunavut. It was a rewarding experience for him but of course he missed summer camp and the wonderful, crazy experience of sharing nature with youth. For Nova, it was the quietest summer ever. In her opinion, the land was lonely for the sound of youth’s laughter.

Billy will soon be returning to the North for a second time but will be home to offer camps in August. He and Nova are committed to offering Redtail programs throughout the year.

Billy and Nova would like to introduce you to another new companion animal. Ramie is an energetic and very endearing young dog of mixed breed. Like Jake he is a rescue animal. The two are getting along very well although Jake has asserted that he is the boss. When you come to Redtail do not be fooled by Ramie’s energetic approach. He is a gentle and loving as can be. You may just see a little bit of our old dog Peter in him.

The overriding goal of all Redtail programs is and has always been to help people see nature as an extension to one's self. We humans are imbedded in nature. There is no other way. What we do to nature we do to ourselves. When we understand and respect the natural world, we understand and respect something about ourselves and our lives become enhansed along with and within the natural world. In accordance with the deep ecology philosophy, we view our relationship with nature as one of equity, not dominance. This persectice cannot be tought, it must be experienced. At Redail we provide the opportunity for people to come into relationship with living beings other than human. We provide the opportunity. Nature does the work. Redail has often been referred to as a working model of deep ecology.

The following acticles futher articulate or are in keeping with the Redtail philosophy.
